The Travelling Assembly
Towards a permanent Peoples' Assembly for Europe
Local participatory democracy in the 7 neighborhoods
At the end of the assembly on the Sunday 29th sept at the PNYX the Athenians members will meet for a few minutes by district/neighborhood to decide together how they will want to go about their local democracy and take this moment forward.
Apart from the symbolic significance (Athens being the cradle of democratic ideals), this initiative responds to modern and practical needs as well. in today’s complex socio-political environment. Athens has faced significant transformations in urban development, infrastructure, and social dynamics, creating both opportunities and challenges. As the city evolves, issues such as gentrification, environmental sustainability, and the integration of diverse communities come to the forefront. These complexities require not only government intervention but also the active involvement of local citizens. By empowering Athenians to participate directly in decision-making processes, participatory democracy ensures that the solutions to these challenges reflect the real needs and aspirations of the people, fostering a sense of community ownership and accountability.
The Democratic Odyssey presents a unique and timely opportunity to activate this citizen's body. As Europe and the world grapple with increasing political fragmentation and a crisis of representation, the Democratic Odyssey paves the way to reignite the democratic flame in Athens and beyond. It is a moment to bridge the gap between citizens and institutions by fostering dialogue and encouraging collective decision-making. This assembly, situated in the birthplace of democracy, is not just symbolic but also practical—it signals a renewed commitment to inclusive governance. Through this initiative, citizens can set a precedent for how participatory democracy can evolve in modern cities, making it the right moment to engage and inspire collective action. It’s all about nurturing!
