The Travelling Assembly
Towards a permanent Peoples' Assembly for Europe
6. ‘If People move, democracy must follow’ - TENSIONS?
[Please note this latest version was made public on 25 May 2025, after the final meeting (External link) of the 2024/25 pilot Assembly]
Tensions? (Florence spirit)
While, it may be understandable for some to feel threatened by the abrupt influx of immigrants a fact that undermined their countries national cohesion, many praised the value of migrants, a sentiment reflected in how non-Europeans themselves felt integrated in the Assembly. People defended the need to equalise the burdens and benefits of immigration among European countries but disagreed on whether european democratic inheritance was threatened or not by migration. Members disagreed on how strong some sort of values conditionality should be. Should we blindly be hospitable to strangers, European or non European, for the sake of hospitality, or does this destabilise the life of those who do not move and value their mode of life. Should people seriously consider the impact of their democratic decisions on people in other countries?
